3 Strand to Chain Splice | |
| This splice is one of the ways to splice 3 stranded rope onto a length of chain. |
| Tools Required3 stranded ropeChain Swedish fid Sharp knife Electrical Tape (same colour as rope) Waxed or polyester thread Superglue |
| Step 1 Whip the 3 stranded rope about 200mm down from the end. Un-ravel the 3 strands down to the whipping. If the rope had previously been heat sealed at the end then just break the strands apart with your fingers, the heat sealed ends will remain intact and prevent the individual strands falling apart. If you haven't got the strength to do this, then cut the heat sealed end off with a knife, and wrap a piece of electrical tape around each strand. | |
| Step 2 Put two strands through the first link of the chain in one direction. |
| Step 3 Put the third strand through the same link, but in the opposite direction. Make sure the one strand which is going in one direction sits on top of and in the middle of the two strands going in the other direction. | |
| Step 4 Select any strand. Lay it back down against the rope. Tuck it under the nearest 'formed up' strand. It is important to remember to do all tucks AGAINST THE LAY OF THE ROPE. |
| Step 5 Rotate the rope and chain slightly and do the same with the second strand. Then rotate the rope and chain again and tuck the third strand. Before you move on, bed these three strands down by pulling on them gentle, being careful not to deform the lay of the rope. | |
| Step 6 Carry on tucking the strands against the lay of the rope until you have completed five full tucks. |
| Step 7 Split each strand into two. | |
| Step 8 Twist up one half of one strand with one half of an adjacent strand. Then tape them together with electrical tape which is the same colour as the rope. |
| Step 9 Cut through the taped up strands and drip some super glue on the end and down the seam of the electrical tape. It stops the tape coming off and stops the strand un-ravelling. It is also a lot neater than a heat sealed end. | |
